What happens

The test

You take a deep breath and blow out as hard and fast as you can into a mouthpiece, several times. You may then use a reliever puffer and repeat the test.

It takes 15 to 30 minutes.

  1. 1Sit comfortably
  2. 2Blow into the mouthpiece
  3. 3Reliever and repeat
  4. 4Results explained

Is it uncomfortable?

It can make you tired or light-headed briefly.

Do I stop my inhalers?

Your GP will advise.

Diagnosis and control

Asthma

Spirometry helps confirm asthma and check how well it is controlled. Everyone with asthma should have a written asthma action plan.

Inhaler technique is checked too.

  1. 1Assessment
  2. 2Spirometry
  3. 3Action plan
  4. 4Regular review
What it costsConsultations are bulk billed for eligible patients with a valid Medicare card.
How often should asthma be reviewed?

At least yearly, more if not controlled.

Is my inhaler technique right?

Bring it and your GP or nurse will check.

Chronic lung disease

COPD

COPD causes ongoing breathlessness and cough, usually in people who have smoked. Spirometry confirms the diagnosis and tracks it over time.

Management includes quitting smoking, inhalers, vaccines and pulmonary rehabilitation.

Understanding spirometry

Plain-language information to help you know what to expect and make informed decisions with your GP.

01

What spirometry measures

Spirometry measures how much air you can breathe out in one second (FEV1) and in total (FVC). The ratio between them helps show whether airways are narrowed.

Testing before and after a reliever puffer shows whether narrowing improves, which helps diagnose asthma.

02

Preparing for the test

Your GP may ask you to pause some inhalers before the test. Avoid smoking, heavy exercise and a large meal for a few hours beforehand, and wear loose clothing.

Reschedule if you have a cold or chest infection.

03

Understanding your results

Results are compared with the expected values for your age, height and sex. Your GP will explain whether they suggest asthma, COPD or another pattern.

Spirometry is often repeated over time to track your condition.

04

Living well with lung conditions

A written action plan, good inhaler technique, vaccinations, staying active and quitting smoking all help.

Pulmonary rehabilitation programs can improve breathing and fitness for people with COPD.

With puffers, as advised.
