Understanding pathology and blood tests

Plain-language information to help you know what to expect and make informed decisions with your GP.

01

What pathology is

Pathology is the study of samples such as blood, urine, swabs and tissue to help diagnose, monitor and prevent disease. Results guide many of the decisions your GP makes.

At Morisset Doctors, 4Cyte Pathology collects samples onsite.

02

Having a blood test

A collector cleans your arm, applies a band and draws blood from a vein into small tubes. It takes a few minutes.

Tell the collector if you feel faint with blood tests, take blood thinners or have had a reaction before.

03

Fasting

Some tests, such as fasting glucose, need you to have nothing but water for 8 to 12 hours. Most tests, including many cholesterol tests, do not.

Your request form or GP will tell you if you need to fast.

04

Results and privacy

Results are sent securely to your doctor. Some results may also appear in your My Health Record.

A follow-up appointment is usually needed to discuss your results.
