Blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes

Heart and metabolic health

Heart disease is one of the leading causes of death in Australian men, and many risk factors have no symptoms. A Heart Health Check looks at blood pressure, cholesterol, blood sugar, weight and lifestyle to estimate your risk.

Small changes to activity, diet, alcohol and smoking can make a real difference, and your GP can talk through treatment options where needed.

  1. 1Book a Heart Health Check
  2. 2Blood pressure and measurements
  3. 3Blood tests, collected onsite
  4. 4Your risk and a plan
What it costsConsultations are bulk billed for eligible patients with a valid Medicare card.
Who should have a Heart Health Check?

Adults 45 and over, and Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander people from 30, or earlier if you have risk factors.

Do I need to fast for blood tests?

Not always. Your GP or the pathology form will tell you.

Questions about PSA testing

Prostate and bladder health

Changes in urination, such as a weak stream, getting up at night or urgency, are common as men age and are worth checking.

PSA testing for prostate cancer has benefits and possible harms. Your GP can help you decide whether testing is right for you, based on your age, family history and preferences.

  1. 1Talk through symptoms and family history
  2. 2Discuss the benefits and risks of PSA testing
  3. 3Tests if you choose them
  4. 4Referral to a urologist if needed
What it costsConsultations are bulk billed for eligible patients with a valid Medicare card.
Should I have a PSA test?

It is a personal decision. Discuss it with your GP, particularly from 50, or from 40 to 45 if prostate cancer runs in your family.

Is getting up at night normal?

It is common, but it can have several causes. Book a check.

Sun exposure and spots

Skin checks

Men in Australia have higher rates of melanoma than women, and outdoor work and sport around the lake add up. Regular skin checks help find changes early.

A head-to-toe skin check looks at moles and spots, including those you cannot see yourself. Skin cancer checks attract a fee at Morisset Doctors.

  1. 1Book a skin check
  2. 2Full examination with a dermatoscope
  3. 3Monitoring, biopsy or removal if needed
  4. 4Recall for your next check
What it costsSkin cancer checks and procedures attract a fee. Reception will confirm the cost.
How often should I have a skin check?

It depends on your risk. Your GP will advise.

What should I look for?

A new spot, or a spot that changes in size, shape or colour, or bleeds.

Stress, mood, sleep and alcohol

Mental health and wellbeing

Men are less likely to seek help for mental health, yet stress, low mood, anger, poor sleep and drinking more than usual are common signals that something needs attention.

Your GP can listen, help you understand what is going on, and arrange support such as a mental health treatment plan and referral to a psychologist.

  1. 1Book a longer appointment
  2. 2Talk it through
  3. 3Agree a plan
  4. 4Follow-up
What it costsConsultations are bulk billed for eligible patients with a valid Medicare card.

Understanding men's health

Plain-language information to help you know what to expect and make informed decisions with your GP.
