Understanding allied health

Plain-language information to help you know what to expect and make informed decisions with your GP.

01

What allied health is

Allied health professionals are university-trained health practitioners, other than doctors and nurses, who help prevent, diagnose and treat a range of conditions. They include physiotherapists, podiatrists, dietitians, psychologists, exercise physiologists, occupational therapists and speech pathologists.

Many are registered with AHPRA and work closely with your GP.

02

Physiotherapy

Physiotherapists assess and treat problems with muscles, joints, nerves and movement, from back pain and sports injuries to recovery after surgery and long-term conditions.

Treatment often combines hands-on therapy, exercise programs and education so you can manage at home.

03

Podiatry

Podiatrists assess and treat problems with the feet, ankles and lower limbs, including heel pain, nail problems, foot care in diabetes and walking mechanics that can affect the knees, hips and back.

Custom orthotics and biomechanical assessments help many people with foot and leg pain.

04

Medicare and allied health

With a GP chronic condition management plan, eligible patients can receive Medicare rebates for up to five allied health services each calendar year. Mental health treatment plans provide rebates for psychology.

Providers set their own fees, so there may be a gap payment.

05

Private health insurance

Extras cover may pay a rebate for physiotherapy, podiatry and other allied health services, depending on your policy.

Check with your fund before your appointment.

06

Working as a team

Your GP, allied health providers and specialists share information with your consent, so everyone works towards the same goals.

Reports from your provider come back to your GP.
