Your risk in one visit

What is checked

Your GP looks at your age, sex, smoking, blood pressure, cholesterol, diabetes, kidney health, weight and family history, then uses the Australian guideline risk calculator to estimate your chance of a heart attack or stroke in the next five years.

Your result is low, intermediate or high, with a plan to match.

  1. 1History and lifestyle
  2. 2Blood pressure and measurements
  3. 3Blood tests
  4. 4Risk result and plan
What it costsConsultations are bulk billed for eligible patients with a valid Medicare card.
How long does it take?

Book a long appointment.

Is it once only?

It can be repeated; your GP will advise when.

What makes a difference

Lowering your risk

Quitting smoking, regular activity, healthy eating, limiting alcohol, a healthy weight and good sleep all lower risk. For some people, medicines for blood pressure or cholesterol are recommended.

Your GP will explain options and benefits.

  1. 1Lifestyle changes
  2. 2Medicine if recommended
  3. 3Recheck numbers
  4. 4Review risk
What it costsConsultations are bulk billed for eligible patients with a valid Medicare card.
Can I lower cholesterol without medicine?

Diet and activity help; some people also need medicine.

What blood pressure is healthy?

Your GP will set a target for you.

Understanding heart health checks

Plain-language information to help you know what to expect and make informed decisions with your GP.

01

Absolute risk explained

Instead of looking at one number such as cholesterol, the check combines all your risk factors to estimate your overall chance of a heart attack or stroke in the next five years.

This helps decide whether lifestyle changes alone or medicines as well make sense for you.

02

Blood pressure at home

Home blood pressure readings can be more reliable than one reading in the clinic. Sit quietly for five minutes, use the same arm and record two readings morning and evening for a week.

Bring the readings to your appointment.

03

Women and heart disease

Heart disease is a leading cause of death in Australian women. Pregnancy conditions such as pre-eclampsia and gestational diabetes, and early menopause, can increase later risk.

Tell your GP about these at your check.

What affects your heart

Tap any factors that apply to you. Watch how each one adds load to your heart, and what helps. This is not a risk calculator; your GP uses the Australian guideline calculator at a Heart Health Check.
