Common reasons

Why an ECG

An ECG can help assess palpitations, a fast or irregular heartbeat, dizziness or fainting, breathlessness, high blood pressure and some medicines, and is used in some pre-operative and work medicals.

It is a snapshot; some rhythm problems need longer monitoring.

Understanding ecg

Plain-language information to help you know what to expect and make informed decisions with your GP.

01

What an ECG measures

Your heart has an electrical system that controls each beat. An ECG records this activity through small sticky electrodes, showing the rate, rhythm and pattern of each heartbeat.

It can show irregular rhythms such as atrial fibrillation, signs of strain or previous damage, and effects of some medicines.

02

When an ECG is useful

Common reasons include palpitations, dizziness or fainting, breathlessness, high blood pressure, before some procedures, before starting certain medicines and as part of some work or sport medicals.

An ECG is a snapshot; a normal result does not rule out all heart problems, so your GP will consider your symptoms too.

03

Preparing

Wear a two-piece outfit, avoid body lotion on your chest, and bring a list of your medicines.

You can eat and drink normally.

04

Chest pain is an emergency

Do not book an appointment for chest pain, pressure or tightness, especially if it spreads to the arm, neck or jaw, or comes with sweating or breathlessness.
